Stump-tailed macaques can live for over 30 years.

Physical Description

Stump-tailed macaques have a powerful build and have dark brown fur, with a short, nearly bald tail. The face is hairless and mottled, with varying amounts of black and red skin. They are born white.

Distribution

They inhabit Southern China and Southeast Asia.

Habitat

Stump-tailed macaques inhabit lowland forest, monsoon forest, dry forest and mountain forest up to 2000m.

Diet

They feed on fruits, leaves and invertebrates.

Behaviour

This species lives in multi-male, multi-female groups with very strong matrilineal hierarchies. The average group size is 20-50 individuals. Stump-tailed macaques are active during the day, and spend their time both in the trees and on the ground

Reproduction

After a gestation period of 166-185 days, females give birth to one infant. They weigh about 350-600g at birth.

Conservation status

Stump-tailed macaques are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN. The main threat to their population is human disturbance.
